Or, A Finger In The Dike?

In dealing with a completely separate issue this morning, RecycleBill found himself dealing with the question, Why is it that corporations and governments have to be forced to do the right thing? If someone has a viable solution to a problem like say, plastics in landfills, then why is it the very companies that could profit the most seem to be the least receptive? What are they scared of?
